About the Weed Society

The Weed Society of Victoria is a Society for people interested in anything about any types of weeds, their management, their place in the environment, biology and even their beauty.

Membership in the Society is open to anyone with an interest in weeds, a desire to learn more or a wise to see them no more. The Society is not limited to those who work with weeds, we encourage everyone interested to join and learn more.

Our main objects are:

  • To promote wider awareness and interest in weeds and their management.
  • To promote opportunities for exchange of information and ideas based on research and practice for those interested in weeds and their management.
  • To encourage the study of weeds and the dissemination of its findings.
  • To do this the Society encourages membership and members come from a wide range of interests, people from both State and Local Governments, private enterprise, chemical companies, agricultural related industries and private individuals, all with some form of interest in weeds.

The Society:

  • Hosts major conferences, a Victorian one every two years and an Australia wide one every twelve years.
  • Annually awards student prizes for weed collections and projects
  • Awards travel grants to attend the biennial Australian Weeds Conference (AWC).
  • Conducts community workshops on weeds to assist in management and to raise awareness of weedy issues.
  • Provides policy advice to State and Federal authorities.

The Society has two members as representatives of the Council of Australasian Weed Societies (CAWS), and each member is therefore a member of CAWS and has reduced rates to the biennial AWC.

The Society does not have the ability to employ people nor help members obtain employment, neither does the Society have the ability to carry out research and produce plans and strategies. However we may be able to help with information and resources, as we do have proceedings of previous meetings available.
