Modelling the potential distribution of weeds Seminar
A seminar to be held at the Department of Primary Industries, Attwood on Thursday 16 April 2009, followed by the 43rd AGM.
Weed modelling can be a valuable tool for estimating and communicating:
- - the impacts of weeds on agriculture and the environment;
- - suitable habitats and hotspots for weed invasion, and informing surveillance for new weed incursions;
- - cost-effective weed management methods; and
- - the success of weed control, including eradication programs.
But the modelling world is a frightening place for the uninitiated, with a dizzying array of methods on offer that are often explained using terminology unfamiliar to those outside the modelling sphere.
This seminar will introduce non-modellers to the types of modelling methods that are available and how they can be used in the field of weeds, including:
- - how they can be used to model weed dispersal and distributions;
- - the expertise required to operate the model;
- - the types of data needed to run the model;
- - the system requirements needed to run the model;
- - the scale at which the model operates; and
- - ways to interpret and present the model outputs, and use these in research and communication.
A flyer is available for download here (2.3Mb, pdf) with more information.

Over the Garden Fence and Far Away - Communities' Action on Weeds
A seminar presented by the Weed Society of Victoria Inc.
Thursday 19th April 2007
What are the problems that face community groups attempting to clear an area of weeds, and what can they do to clean up a weedy area so that it does not become a sea of seedlings but an area of restored bush.
What is a declared weed and how does that differ from the environmental weeds of bushland, and what are the weeds that require mapping and controlling.
This seminar looks at how communities can help themselves and also keep their areas weed free.

A seminar presented by the Weed Society of Victoria Inc.
Date: Thursday 17th February 2005
Venue: Lecture Theatre E2, Building 32, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University, Wellington Rd., Clayton.
How well known or understood are weed policies? Are weed policies seen as either unrealistic or controversial or just something to be ignored?
- Why do Governments make them?
- Are they realistic or idealistic and are they enacted successfully by the agencies that should be in charge of them?
- What are the differences between the various policies that are put together by the numerous branches of Government?
- Are our perceptions of these policies correct and how do they impinge on any management?
- What industries are creating problems and are responsible for weeds and their management?
This seminar examined how policies for weed management are perceived and how they are or are not put into action. This was intended for policy makers, practitioners or just those who wanted to know who has the authority to do what in the area of policy and management.
